Combos
Combos descrribe the influence one building has on the other buildings in your town. Like a slum not only has a negative popularity itself but also might drop the popularity of other nearby buildings. These interactions between buildings can have a major impact on your city stats. Balancing of building combos has been done such that most combos have positive effects while there are only a few combos with negative effects. This has been done for the players good because we wanted that players could not do much wrong. But of course, someone who takes combos into consideration can build much better cities than someone who ignores them. So there is a great potential to perform better while the risk to really damage your city stats is rather low.
The influence between two buildings decreases as distance between them increases. Influence is measured by effect strength which is 1 / distance for a single building. Thus if the distance between two buildings is 3 squares the effect strength is 1/3 = 33%. On the picture this is the case for city hall and police station.
Properties
A combo can have the following properties:
Range
Defines the maximum distance between two buildings where a combo works. Buildings out of range are not affected by the combo. The greater the distance the lower the effects are.
Max. strength
Defines whether the effect strength is limited or not.
If there would be a combo where the police station(s) would influence the city hall, the effect strength would be 66,7% (2/3), because two police stations have a 33% effect each. But if that combo would have a max. strength of 0,5 (50%) than the real effect strength would be only 0,5 instead of 0,67.
Effects
Each Combo has at least one effect, but can have more than one. Hypothetically a combo could use all of the following effects. But such super combos are not planned right now.
Area factor
A nearby building increases the area factor of a building. For example the area factor of a shapping mall increases from nearby skyscrapers, tower blocks and even slums. Area factor can not rise above 1.0.
Popularity
The popularity of a buliding increases (or decreases) because of another nearby building. For example slums and radar stations have a negative effect on all nearby buildings. The popularity of a skyscraper increases if parks, shoppingmalls or a school are in range. The effect changes the base popularity of a certain building i.e. before the area factor and building level are applied to compute the popularity of the building. Thus with very low area factors the effects might not be noticeable.
Places
This effect modifies the number of places a building has regardless its level. The number of places can not drop below zero.
Food
This effect changes the base production of a building, i.e. bevore area factor, building level and other effects (like the modifier from the system of government) are applied.
Nature index
This effect modifies the nature index of a single building and thus also effects the nature index of the whole city and consequently can lower or increase the city popularity.
Calculing combos
Example
In the description of the Organic Farm one can find the following combo:
City Hall
| range | 20 |
| max. effect strength | 0.05 |
| Area factor | +10 |
On the above image the organic farm was built on city coordinates (1 | 1). The distance to the city hall is thus Pythagoras sqrt(2). From a = 1 and b = 1 and c² = a² + b² follows c² = 1² + 1² = 2, thus c = sqrt(2) ~ 1,41. Consequently the organic farm is within the range of the city hall.
The effect strength would than be 1 / sqrt(2) ~ 0,71. But the combo definition says: max. strength = 0,05. Thus the combo only works only with a strength of 0,05.
Combo effect is: Area factor +10 (i.e. + 1000%). Multiplying this with the strength we get the real impact: 0,05 * 10 = +0,5. I.e. the city hall increases the area factor of the organic farm by 50% (= 0,5).
Distances
Refering again to the above image we get the following distances from the city hall:
- Park: 1,0
- Organic Farm: sqrt(2) ~ 1,41
- Farm: 2,0
- Residential Quarter: sqrt(5) ~ 2,24
- Restaurant: sqrt(8) ~ 2,83
- Police Department: 3,0
- Fire Department: sqrt(10) ~ 3,16
- Department of Foreign Affairs: sqrt(13) ~ 3,6
- Building Authority: sqrt(18) ~ 4,24
